Charlestown Community Survey

Cbalogo Last night I attended my first Charlestown Business Association meeting, and it was really quite interesting.

Last year, in an effort to better understand the local business climate, Charlestown conducted a market research study and determined that its residents spend about $225 million per year [collectively] on retail goods and services, yet only $54 million is spent within 02129. Where does the other $171 million go, and how can the CBA keep it from leaving Charlestown?

In order to answer these questions, and to better meet the needs of its residents, employees, and visitors, the CBA fielded a public survey to all 7,524 households (via inserts in the Charlestown Patriot-Bridge and various public locations), and received a total of 1,095 responses (or, a 15% response rate - quite successful by market research standards). The survey sought public input on the future of Charlestown's Retail, Restaurant, and Service Districts, and the responses were quite revealing.

AMA Boston Tagline Contest

Attention all Creatives!Amalogo

The Boston Chapter of the American Marketing Association is sponsoring a tagline contest to coincide with its upcoming rebranding initiative. Ideas may be submitted here; the winner will receive an iPod Shuffle, a complimentary pass to one (just one??) AMA event, and recognition on the web site.

While I applaud the effort to get its member base involved - their mission is, after all, to connect local marketing folks - I think they could have executed it differently for more impact.

Instead of asking members to submit their ideas via SurveyMonkey, why not allow them to post them directly on the site, so that everyone else can see - and potentially vote on - the submissions? That would really get people connecting.

New Year, New You

The start of any New Year is typically accompanied by a slew of resolutions. This year is no different, with WNBC/Marist reporting that 43% of Americans intend to make a New Year's resolution (down 1% from last year).

The most common:

  • lose weight (17%)
  • quit smoking (17%)
  • "be a better person" (14%)
  • spend less money (11%)

Interestingly, "eat healthier" and "exercise more" were only noted by 5% of the resolution-makers, so I don't know how many of those vowing to "lose weight" will be successful!

It's also interesting to note that the most frequently-cited resolutions are all rather self-serving; take a look at the less frequently noted ones:

  • increase family time (3%)
  • be kinder to others (2%)
  • get closer to God (1%)

While women are more likely to make resolutions (49% vs. 37% men), they are less likely to keep them (56% women vs. 63% men). If you can't be bothered with making resolutions, it is also a good time to reflect on the good things in life, and start the year off on a positive note. This Economist article about the state of our nation will certainly get you thinking.
