ReadBoston is a nonprofit children's literacy program founded by Mayor Thomas M. Menino in an effort to have all Boston school children reading at grade level by the end of third grade.Data shows that the way to create lasting literacy skills is to introduce a love for reading at an early age, and ReadBoston does its part by training childcare providers and teachers in the most effective approaches to teaching literacy, and engaging celebrities and professional athletes to get kids excited about reading.
Tonight's Author Series was attended by Mayor Menino and featured Clara Silverstein, former food writer of the Boston Herald and author of The Boston Chef's Table, and Chris Douglass, Executive Chef and Owner of the venerable Icarus in the South End, and the newly opened Ashmont Grill in Dorchester.
If you've worked in downtown Boston for any period of time, you've likely tasted Sebastian's food, either in one of their six retail locations or via their corporate catering services. Their retail spots are great - offering up hot entrees, sandwiches, salads and an assortment of baked goods, in addition to the crepe station that the newer spots feature. The Interactive Kitchen is located in their new corporate headquarters on Seaport Boulevard and features a private kitchen, fireside dining room, full service bar and over 300 bottles of wine.
I was so impressed with the event - the space was perfect and the food fantastic. Among the menu items: baked polenta with braised wild mushrooms, hand sliced yukon gold potato chips with aioli dipping sauce, crabmeat sandwiches, mushroom bisque, scallops with bacon and maple syrup, bread and vegetable crudite with cheese fondue, and yummy little beet/cheddar/potato towers (pictured at right).
The good news is that Sebastian's has more events planned that are opened to the public (e.g., Holiday Cocktails and Festive Hors D'ouevres on Dec 5) and is available for private parties and corporate events alike.
