Boston Pops/Edgefest

OK - here is the official background story to all the random pictures I just posted.

Tonight I attended Edgefest, a series in which the Boston Pops perform with independent and alternative artists in an effort to draw a broader range of music enthusiasts to Symphony Hall.

The lineup included musical pieces from 25-year-old composer Nico Muhly and 34-year-old composer Felix Brenner - who paired with internationally acclaimed DJ Paul Oakenfold and 19-year-old Swede Andreas Brobjer on drums for a stunning latin-themed electronic piece with orchestral backup. Sounds over the top, but trust me, it was amazing.

After intermission, the Pops were joined by Hem (of Liberty Mutual fame). What a fantastic show.

Boston Winery

Bostonwinery_2 Curious about winemaking but don't have a vineyard nearby to partake?

Bostonians now have a local option in the Boston Winery.

The brainchild of Ralph Bruno - owner of Italian restaurant Venezia next door - this 12,000 square foot facility offers individuals and groups the chance to purchase a barrel of wine and take part in as much (or as little) of the winemaking process as they choose (even grape crushing!).

Membership seems steep at $2650-$6000, but a deal when you consider you're getting a BARREL'S worth, plus all of the service, education, storage, and supplies (custom labels!). There are also future plans for members-only dinners and wine trips.

The Winery is taking orders now for the 2007 growing season.

Video Game Addiction

This is funny. These two articles appeared next to each other in my CEA SmartBrief newsletter today:
Video_game

The first one links to a video clip about the American Medical Association's discussion of whether video game addiction as a mental illness (what?!).

The second highlights a new Web application from MTV Networks that allows Facebook members to build gaming right into their profiles. MTVN hopes to grow distribution of the thousands of other games available at AddictingGames.com by introduce the teen-male–oriented site to a host of new users at Facebook.

Score one for the societal (vs. medical) school of thought.

Let the games begin!
